Mordor in Austria

Of course you’ve heard of Mordor. It’s the one place in Middle Earth (Lord of The Rings) that one would most certainly avoid going to. Nonetheless, Frodo had to, in order to destroy THE ONE RING! – so Tom and myself felt like we had to go there as well. And would you believe it – Mordor is somehow just round the corner from our little countryside house and in the region of Upper Austria. See for yourself…

But what seems to be The Mountain of Doom, actually is called the Große Priel (which is German for Great Priel) and is located in the region around skiing resort Hinterstoder.

Park near the former Hotel Dietlgut (see picture below), which is a 30ties-style mansion having close resemblance to the Overlook Hotel (Timberline Lodge) from Stephen King’s horror classic Shining. Spooky as this may be, there’s really nothing to be afraid of walking past.

Next time we go there, we’ll head for the Schiederweiher, which in 2018 was awarded Most Beautiful Place in Austria by millions of Austrian TV viewers.
